What are Implant Dentures?
Implant Dentures are used to replace missing teeth or teeth that are broken or damaged beyond repair.
An implant is a titanium post which is placed into your jawbone to replace the root of your tooth. A full set of teeth can be replaced with a denture which securely attaches to implants. We usually use four implants for upper dentures and two implants for lower dentures.
Why an Implant Denture?
Conventional denture are made of acrylic and can look very lifelike and natural. However, people often struggle with the fit of dentures and the feeling of them not being secure enough. People find they become dislodged when eating and speaking and they worry about them falling out.
A solution to this problem is an implant supported denture. This is where dental implants (titanium posts placed into the jawbone under the gum), are used to give physical retention to a denture. The denture is still removable and so is easy to clean and maintain, but it attaches to the implants by clicking into place.
This gives a huge improvement in the retention and secure feel of the denture and can transform confidence, eating and speaking.

Consultation
At your consultation appointment, we carry out a full oral health check and discuss your teeth, gums and general health. We talk about possible treatment options for you.
Implant placement
Implant placement. Two to four dental implants are placed surgically into the jawbone, under the gum and left in place to heal for approximately 3 months.
The implants are uncovered and checked for good healing and the new denture starts to be made
Final Fit
After implants have been given time to heal, the new denture is completed, with attachments ready to engage with the implants for a strong and secure fit.

Dental Implants and alternative options? When replacing missing teeth there are often three options available; Dentures (removable false teeth), Bridges (false teeth supported by other teeth) and Dental Implants. Because dental implants are placed into the jawbone, they are generally the strongest and most natural looking solution and are often referred to as the gold standard solution for replacing teeth. In some scenarios bridges are not possible, and there are also times where implants may not be your best solution. Our consultation appointments go into this in detail, discussing your teeth, gums and general health, and what options you have available to you.
Do I have enough bone for dental implants? People are sometimes told they do not have enough bone for dental implants, or because they have had periodontal disease (gum disease), that they are not suitable for implants. This is not necessarily the case. A large number of our dental implants are placed when people have lost a lot of bone due to periodontal disease or other causes. If someone doesn’t have very much jaw bone, we can use bone grafts to increase the size of the bone so it is big enough to support a dental implant.
What is a bone graft? When needed, we can increase the size of the jaw bone to allow implants to be placed. This is sometimes needed if someone has suffered from gum disease or infection. Bone grafts that we use come in various forms. Depending on the scenario, we can use bone graft which contains some animal products, bone graft which is completely synthetic, or sometimes we can reposition small bits of your jaw bone during the implant surgery to increase the volume of your jaw bone. All of these options are very tried and tested and seen as safe procedures but we of course check you are happy with each type of bone graft before we consider it as an option for you.
How much do Implants cost? Cost of dental implants varies depending on the procedure. A single implant is £2475, implant dentures cost from £6500 and a full arch of teeth is £15000. Prices vary depending on how many teeth and how many implants are needed, for example replacing 5 teeth in a row would require a 5 tooth implant bridge but less than 5 implants are needed here. We always start with a full consultation which is £84. This appointment includes a full assessment, oral health check, x rays, scans and photographs, and investigating all your potential treatment options and what may be best for you. At this appointment we can also give costs of various options.
Types of Dental Implants
There are many different ways to use dental implants to restore missing teeth. Implants come in different shapes and sizes and are used as a single implant or in combination to replace teeth - from a single tooth up to a full set of teeth.

Single Tooth Implants
A dental implant is a titanium post which is placed into the jaw bone to replace the root of your tooth. This is then restored with an implant crown (artificial tooth) which is screwed into the top of the implant. This creates a strong and natural solution for tooth replacement and with good oral hygiene and regular maintenance can last for 15 years or more.

Multiple Teeth Implants
Multiple teeth implants can be used to replace 2 or more teeth which are next to each other. These are also called implant bridges. Implant bridges usually mean fewer implants are required to replace the number of missing teeth. For example, we can sometimes replace two missing teeth with one implant, or five missing teeth with 3 implants. Where appropriate, this means less surgery and lower cost of treatment compared to replacing each tooth individually. Implant bridges are natural, life-like, and screwed into the top of the implants to give a strong and long lasting solution.
All on 4 or Full Mouth Implants
Implants can be used to replace a full set of teeth. When replacing a full arch of teeth (top of bottom) with a fixed solution, we call this an implant bridge. This treatment is often called an All on 4 or all on 6 (depending on if we use 4 or 6 implants). This treatment is an option when someone already has a full denture or if they need all their remaining teeth removing.
Teeth in a day
Teeth in a day or same day teeth is when we are replacing a full arch of teeth with implants and we remove the teeth, place the implants and fit a temporary bridge to the implants all on the same day. It is a fantastic solution (when suitable) because it means leaving with a fixed solution on the same day. After approximately 3 months of healing time, the temporary bridge is replaced with the final bridge and is screwed onto the implants.
Implant Dentures
Implants can also be used to secure dentures into place. This is a hybrid option between an implant bridge and a conventional denture. The use of implants means the denture is far more stable and secure than a normal denture but has the benefit of being a lower cost option that an implant bridge. Implant dentures are also easy to maintain because the denture is removable and this means you can take the denture out to clean the implants easily.
