What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made of medical-grade titanium, designed to replace missing teeth. These small screw-shaped structures are surgically attached to the jaw bone and serve as a sturdy foundation for an artificial tooth or a set of multiple teeth. This cutting-edge solution ensures functionality, comfort, and a natural appearance.
A full mouth implant bridge, sometimes known as 'All on Four'.

The Benefits of Dental Implants
There are multiple advantages to choosing dental implants as a tooth replacement solution. Some of these key benefits include:
-
A natural appearance and comfortable fit
-
Potential for same-day tooth replacement (although this may not be suitable for everyone)
-
A success rate of up to 98% when performed by a skilled dental professional
-
Preservation of the jaw bone and facial structure
-
Long-lasting and durable results with proper care and maintenance
The Essential Components of Dental Implants
An implant consists of two main parts:
-
The Implant: The titanium screw that fuses with your jaw bone. This creates a strong and sturdy base for the artificial tooth.
-
The Crown (Prosthetic Tooth): A custom-made artificial tooth that's attached to the implant to complete the implant restoration.
Bone Grafting: A Potential Prerequisite for Dental Implants
For long-term success, dental implants need sufficient jaw bone support. However, some patients may require bone grafting before proceeding with implant surgery.
How can you determine whether bone grafting is necessary?
Our experts at Springfield Dental Practice will assess your bone volume and structure and provide tailored recommendations during your initial consultation.
Step One
Initial Consultation and Planning
The first step towards getting implants is to arrange an initial consultation at our Dental Practice in West Kirby on the Wirral. During this appointment, our dentist will:
-
Evaluate your oral health and overall medical history
-
Discuss your treatment goals and expectations
-
Take detailed X-rays and 3D images and scans of your teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures
-
Determine if you're a suitable candidate for dental implants
-
Create an individualised treatment plan
Discuss any supplementary procedures that may be necessary, such as bone grafting, prior to implant placement
Step Two
Surgical Placement of the Implant
Once your personalised treatment plan has been created and all necessary tests completed, our dentist will proceed with the surgical placement of the implant. This procedure involves:
-
Administering a local anaesthetic to numb the area
-
Making a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the jaw bone
-
Drilling a hole into the bone to prepare for implant insertion
-
Inserting the implant into the prepared hole
-
Closing the gum tissue around the implant
Following the surgery, you'll need a healing period of around three to six months. This allows the implant to fuse with the jaw bone in a process called osseointegration. This creates a solid and secure foundation for the artificial tooth.
Step Three
Fitting of the Abutment and Crown
Once the healing period is complete, the new crown is made and fitted to complete the implant restoration. This includes:
-
Taking a scan or impression of the dental implant and surrounding teeth.
-
The dental lab making a custom tooth (crown) to blend in with your natural smile
-
Attaching the custom crown to the implant
At this stage, your new dental implant is now complete and fully functional, providing you with a natural-looking replacement for your missing tooth or teeth.

FAQs
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are usually the best option available for replacing a missing tooth or multiple missing teeth. A titanium post is placed in the jaw bone to act as the root of a tooth, then a crown is made to replace the visible 'top' of the tooth. Multiple implants can be used to replace multiple missing teeth, even to the extent of replacing a whole set of teeth. For multiple teeth, we don't always need to use one dental implant per tooth. The specifics of a plan depend on each patient and which teeth we are replacing.
Can I have dental implants for multiple teeth?
Dental implants can be used to replace multiple missing teeth. We place dental implants into the jaw bone (under the gum) and then create a bridge which fixes into place on top of the implants. For multiple teeth, we don't always need to use one dental implant per tooth. The specifics of a plan depend on each patient and which teeth we are replacing. Bridges can be used on top of dental implants and for a full set of teeth we can use either a bridge or a removable denture which attaches to the implants.
How are dental implants fitted?
Dental implants are done in stages, including removing the damaged tooth, a period of healing for the jawbone, placement of the dental implant and manufacturing of a crown (artificial tooth) to create a new tooth. This process takes several months and the exact process varies depending on each individual. When a period of healing is required after tooth extraction, we have various options for temporary teeth to avoid leaving a gap in your smile during treatment.
What are same day implants?
Same day implants, also known as immediate load dental implants, allow placement of a temporary tooth during the same appointment as your dental implant placement. This can also all be combined with the appointment for removal of the existing tooth. This option is not suitable in some circumstances and a more staged approach may have a higher success rate in some instances.
What is bone grafting for dental implants?
Bone grafting is used to help recreate bone where there is not enough natural bone present. We have various types of bone graft which we use, the details of this can be explained further at a consultation appointment.
