ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

REMOVING A CAUSE OF PAIN AND INFECTION

Sometimes the nerve in a tooth can become damaged due to trauma or significant decay. In these circumstances and in order to save a tooth a nerve can be removed in order to resolve pain and infection.

We carefully remove the damaged nerve from the tooth and replace it with a sterile filling with the aim to maintain the tooth. After this we usually recommend protecting back teeth with a Crown or Onlay.

Why Root Canal Treatment is Needed:

The pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels, can get infected or

inflamed due to deep decay, trauma to the tooth, or repeated dental  procedures on the same tooth.

If left untreated, an infected pulp can lead to an abscess (a pocket of pus) or even cause the tooth to become severely damaged and need to be extracted.

ROOT CANAL TREATMENT PROCEDURE

Root canal treatment is usually done in one or two visits to the dentist.

1. Diagnosis and X-ray

The dentist will take an X-ray of the affected tooth to see the extent of

damage or infection and plan the treatment.

2. Anaesthesia

Local anaesthesia is applied to numb the area around the tooth.

This ensures that you won’t feel pain during the procedure.

3. Access Opening

The dentist makes a small opening in the crown (top) of the

tooth to access the pulp chamber.

4. Cleaning and Shaping

The infected or damaged pulp is removed using small instruments.

The inside of the root canals is then thoroughly cleaned and

shaped to prepare it for filling.

5. Disinfection

The dentist disinfects the cleaned root canals to ensure any

remaining bacteria are eliminated.

6. Filling The Canal

After the canals are cleaned, they are filled with a

biocompatible material, and the access opening is sealed.

7. Final Restoration

In most cases, a crown or filling is placed on the tooth to restore its

function and appearance. This is especially important for teeth that

have been significantly weakened by decay or infection.

Why it's important

Root canal therapy helps save a tooth that would otherwise need

to be extracted.

It prevents the spread of infection and alleviates the pain associated with a damaged or infected tooth.
