Missing or broken teeth can cause a lack of confidence or difficulty eating and speaking. When teeth can no longer be fixed, replacing them with dental implants is very often the best solution. In this article we will break down what a Dental Implant is, how it’s attached and the benefits of having one.

What is a Dental Implant?

A Dental Implants is used to replace missing teeth or teeth that are broken or damaged beyond repair, but what is it?

An implant consists of two main parts, a titanium post which is placed into your jawbone to replace the root of your tooth. The artificial tooth, or crown, sits on top of the implant and is screwed into place. Multiple teeth can also be attached to several implants as a bridge, replacing up to a whole set of teeth.

Dental implants are generally seen as the best solution and the closest method of replacing a tooth like for like.

How we at Springfield Dental fit your Dental Implants

Getting a Dental Implant fitted can feel like a daunting task for patients and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of information that’s out there, so we’ve broken it down into three simple steps to give you a basic idea of what generally happens when you need a Dental Implant.

Step1: Consultation

This will be your first appointment to assess and establish your needs and the best methods to help you. We carry out a full oral health check and discuss your teeth, gums and general health.

From there we talk about possible treatment options for you and will decide on the best course of action to move forward, if that’s a Dental Implant, we move onto step two.

Step 2: Implant Placement

This is the surgical appointment where the implant or multiple implants are put into place. We do this by gently placing a small titanium post into the jawbone under local anaesthesia. Sometimes we do this at the same time as removal of teeth, other times teeth must be removed first.

At this point your tooth or teeth will be restored with a temporary solution while we give the implant time to heal. During the 3-6 month healing phase, the implant fuses with the jawbone to create a strong foundation for your new tooth.

Step 3: Final Placement

After your implant has been given time to heal, the temporary tooth is removed and replaced with the final crown, completing your new, natural look. With good oral hygiene and maintenance, these can last for over 15 years.
